2. Diagram, label and explain the components of a muscle fiber
Expert Solution
Step 1
Muscle fibers refer to the cells present within the muscles. They are responsible for controlling the movement of the body together. The contraction and relaxation of muscle fiber are responsible for producing a motion.
Step 2
The components of muscle fiber include-
- Sarcoplasmic reticulum- refers to a membrane-bounded part of the muscle fiber that works similarly as done by endoplasmic reticulum within the cells. Sarcoplasmic acts as a storehouse of calcium ions.
- Myofibril-it refers to a longitudinal filament present in the muscle fiber and runs parallel concerning each other. Myofibril is composed of actin and myosin, and some other proteins responsible for associating the myofibrils with each other.
- Sarcomere- the smallest unit of the muscle fiber and has organized structural regulatory and also contractile proteins. The contraction of the muscle occurred due to the shortening of the sarcomere.
- Actin and myosin-these are the proteins present in the muscle fiber and are primarily responsible for muscle contraction. The head of myosin protein associates with the actin protein under the stimulus and slide over each other, which helps in contraction.
