Barbara has difficulty conceiving even after a year of marriage and without the use of contraception. She
decided to consult an OB-Gyne and was diagnose with polycystic ovarian syndrome which is the cause of
her difficulty to conceive. She was advised to undergo fertility therapy, taking medicines to enhance
ovulation. She also took a one-month vacation to reduce her stress level brought upon by the pressure
from her work. 4 months after taking fertility drugs, she got pregnant.
She was 37 years old when she got pregnant with her daughter, Thea. Barbara was lactose intolerant,
she was given calcium supplements to help develop the bone growth of the fetus.
Barbara went for prenatal check-up regularly. On the 5th week of pregnancy, the baby has no heart beat.
She was advised by the doctor to have another check up on the 8th week of pregnancy. Fortunately, they
were able to hear the rhythm of the embryo's heart. She was given vitamins and folic acids to help
develop Thea's brain growth. During that time, she did not manifest any pregnancy symptoms such as
nausea and vomiting.
Barbara is a call center agent by profession, she lives in Manila by herself. She usually works from
11:00PM to 7:00AM in the morning. When she gets home, she has to do the household chores by herself.
Her husband, Larry, works at an industrial company in Baguio City.
Barbara has only one craving during her pregnancy. She drinks coffee all the time. She also has an active
lifestyle. Her OB-Gyne lives in Baguio City, she would travel to Baguio once a month to see her husband
and to have her monthly check-up. She also followed prenatal exercises from YouTube twice a week.
Thea, as a fetus, is very active. She moves a lot when she was still in the womb. However, she was a very
tiny being. Her size is smaller than what is expected from her. The doctor said, that the fetus' body
refuse to consume what the mother is eating. Hence, she was given more vitamins. Fortunately, Thea has
a very strong heartbeat.
Barbara has no vices, although she cannot give up soda and coffee during pregnancy. She also eats a lot
of junkfoods and salty foods. At 6th month of pregnancy, Barbara's cholesterol level shoots up. She was
advised by her doctor to watch what she's eating.
On the third trimester, Barbara was diagnosed with preeclampsia, an illness which is the leading cause
for maternal and infant death. Every time her blood pressure shoots up, she would feel the baby shaking
inside her womb. She was given a lot of medicine to manage her illness. She have to stop working and
her husband resigned from his job to be with her. She would stay in the hospital for more than a month,
regulating her blood pressure.
A little over 8th months of pregnancy, Barbara's blood pressure shoots up. They decided to deliver the
baby to avoid unprecedented complications. The baby is supposed to be born on March 6, however, due
to complications. Thea was born on the 15th day of February 2015 through cesarean section. The baby
weighs 2.1 kilogram and 11.4 inches.
