Question
Determine the limiting reactant for the following reaction. And, find out grams of CO2 formed from 59.4 grams of O2 and 80.4 grams of CH4? CH4(g) + 2O2(g) à CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
Expert Solution
Step1 limiting reagent
in any Balanced chemical equation limiting reagent decided the amount of products formed because limiting reagent is totally consumed in reaction.
Step 2 determining limiting reagent
CH4(g) + 2O2(g) --------------> CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
From above Balanced equation
16 g of CH4 needed 64g of O2
So, 80.4 g of CH4 needed = (64÷16)×80.4 = 321.6 g of O2
But we have only 59.4 g of O2, hence O2 act as limiting reagent.
O2 is limiting reagent.
