Question

Describe the relationship between form and function for each type of epithelium.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Tissues are cell groups that have a similar structure and function together. The tissue is intermediate between cells and a full organ. It collects identical cells and its extracellular matrix, which have the same origin and perform a certain function together.

Step 2

Epithelial tissue is one form of tissue and is found in a wide area throughout the body. They include Simple squamous epithelium, Stratified squamous epithelium, Simple cuboidal epithelium, Stratified cuboidal epithelium, Transitional Epithelium, Simple columnar epithelium, Pseudostratified columnar epithelium, and Stratified columnar epithelium.

  1. Simple squamous epithelium is flat cells that are arranged in a sheet. They are sufficiently thin to form a membrane through which compounds can pass through passive diffusion. The capillaries' walls, pericardial linings, and alveoli linings in the lung have this epithelial form. The major function is secretion and absorption.
  2. The stratified squamous epithelium consists of squamous epithelial cells arranged on a basal membrane in layers. Only one layer is in contact with the basement membrane; the other layers bind to each other to retain structural integrity. They are seen in the place where there is significant mechanical or chemical stress, the inner layer of skin and mouth, esophagus, and vagina. The major function is secretion and absorption.
  3. The simple cuboidal epithelium consists of one single layer of cells that are usually cube-shaped. They have big, spherical or central nuclei. They are seen in the ovaries' surface, nephrons lining, renal walls,  and sections of the eye and Thyroid, along with the salivary glands. The major function is secretion and absorption.
  4. Stratified cuboidal epithelium is a kind of epithelial tissue consisting of many cubic cell layers. Sweat glands, mammary glands, and salivary glands are known to contain this kind of tissue. They cover areas such as mammary and salivary glands of the sweat glands. The major function is secretion, protection, and absorption.
  5. Transitional Epithelium is a type of stratified epithelium is the transition epithelium. This tissue comprises many epithelial cell layers that can contract or expand to accommodate the required degree of distension. The temporary epithelium is known as urothelium and protects the urinary system.
  6. The simple columnar epithelium has a  single cell layer connected to the basement's cell membrane with oval nuclei situated in the basement. They line the digestive tract organ such as the stomach and the intestine, and the uterus. The major function is secretion, protection, and absorption.
  7. The pseudostratified columnar epithelium is a kind of epithelium composed of a single cell layer that looks like many layers, as the nuclei of cells exist at various levels. The nasal cavity, trachea, and bronchi lining, reproductive tract in males have this type of cells. Their main function is protection and secretion.
  8. The stratified columnar epithelium is an unusual form of epithelial tissue consisting of several layers of column-shaped cells. The conjunctive pharynx and anus are contained in the urethra of men. Their main function is protection.
