Describe the pigment systems and how they function.

Expert Solution
Step 1

BASIC INFORMATION

PHOTIOSYNTHESIS

It is the process in which light energy is used by the plants in presence of carbon dioxide to make glucose and release oxygen.

This process is performed by autotrophs in order to make their own food.

In this process light energy from sun is converted into chemical energy.

All this only possible because of the pigments present inside the plants called chlorophyll which in present inside the chloroplast inside the thylakoid membrane.

Step 2

PIGMENT SYSTEM

  • It is basically the units which are used in photosynthesis.
  • They are also known as 'antenna complex' or the 'photochemical reaction centre'.
  • They are present in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast.
  • The pigment system are of two types that is Photosystem I and Photosystem II.

Photosystem I

  • It has chlorophyll a,b and carotenoids as their pigments.
  • It has a larger core subunit.
  • It is made up of 670, 700 , 680  and 695 chlorophyll - A, chlorophyll B and Carotenoids.

Photosystem II

  •  It also has carotenoids as its pigment.
  • It has smaller core unit tha photosystem I.
  • It has chlorophyll- b and some chlorophyll a like chlorophyll a - 670, 677 .
