Chromosomes are thread-like structures that contains the genes and are located in the nucleus. Chromosomes that determines the sex of an individual are referred to as sex chromosomes or allosomes and the other chromosomes that determine the somatic characters are referred to as autosomes or somatic chromosomes.

The different forms of a particular gene that specifies a character is referred to as an allele. The sex chromosomes in addition to defining the sex of an individual also contain particular genes that specify somatic characters and these genes would follow sex-linked inheritance patterns.
