Describe the gross anatomy of a long bone.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The Connective tissue represents one of the four major types of tissues found in humans. The connective tissues are known to be the most abundant type of tissue in human beings. The cells of connective tissues are suspended in a matrix or ground substance, which helps in distinguishing different types of connective tissues.

Step 2

Bone and cartilage are the two types of connective tissue responsible for providing structure to the human body. The bone matrix is made up of collagen fibers and different mineral salts, which gives it a rigid or tough structure.

The gross anatomy of a long bone: A long bone is divided into two parts, the diaphysis and the epiphysis. The diaphysis represents the midsection or shaft of a bone made up of cortical bone containing bone marrow and adipose tissue. In contrast, the epiphysis is described as the expanded end, where the growth of bone occurs. The medullary cavity filled with yellow marrow represents the hollow region of a diaphysis, while red marrow is found in the spongy bone of the epiphysis. The growth plate or epiphyseal plate refers to the region where both (epiphysis and diaphysis) the parts of a long bone meets. The inner surface of long bone forming the medullary cavity is lined by a vascular membrane known as endosteum. The outermost region of bone is also covered by a periosteum membrane, which contains blood vessels and nerves nourishing the compact bone. Some of the long bones are found in legs, arms, collar bones, and more.
