Earth formed around 4.5 billion years ago, as a hot sphere of gases and lava. Initially the earth was devoid of any life and atmosphere, as the gases prevailing were non supportive of life. The environment prevailing then was extremely reducing as there were no traces of oxygen. Later by the continued physical, chemical and biological processes started condensation and then formed the water bodies. Formation of water bodies transformed the reducing, oxygen devoid conditions to oxidizing, oxygen sufficient conditions and then hence led to the formation of the atmosphere.
