Step 1 Introduction on Respiratory System:

Respiration is basically an act of breathing in and out. It consists of the upper respiratory tract and lower respiratory tract. 

The upper respiratory tract involves nose, nasal cavity and sinuses and the lower respiratory tract involves voice box, windpipe, lungs, airways and air sacs. The lungs are divided into left and right parts. The air enters through the nose, travels down through the larynx and trachea and goes into the lungs through the main stem bronchi and there it involves gas exchange.

Step 2 Physiological process of Inhalation and Exhalation:

Lungs are a very important part of the respiratory system, and other organs include the nose as a passageway to transfer the air, pharynx, Larynx, trachea, main bronchi and the respiratory membrane as well.

  • 4 distinct processes define respiration that is Pulmonary Ventilation: Air must move into and out of the lungs so that gases in the air sacs are continuously refreshed.
  • External respiration: The exchange between the pulmonary blood and alveoli must take place.
  • Respiratory gas transport: Oxygen and carbon dioxide must be transported to and from the lungs and tissue cells of the body via the bloodstream.
  • Internal Respiration: At systemic capillaries, gas exchange must be made between the blood and tissue cells.

Respiration consist of 2 process mainly: Inhalation and Exhalation: (Events)

Inhalation:

Exhalation:

The process of taking in air.

The process of releasing air from lungs.

Diaphragm moves down by contracting and becomes flat.

Diaphragm moves up by relaxing and becomes dome shaped.

External intercostal muscles contract and internal intercostal muscles will relax.

External intercostal muscles relax and internal intercostal muscles will contract.

Size of the chest cavity increases.

Size of chest cavity decreases.

Oxygen is taken into the lungs.

Carbon dioxide is removed from the body.

Lungs are inflated.

Lungs are deflated.

Oxygen is taken into the blood. 

Carbon dioxide is taken off from the blood.
