Question
Describe Mohr’s Failure Criterion?
Expert Solution
Step 1
The theory of Mohr implies that failure occurs once the circle of Mohr reaches the envelope provided by the two circles of Mohr of uniaxial tensile strength as well as uniaxial compression strength at quite a specific point. The following figure shows this envelope.
At the restricting compression stress sc of the stuff, the leftward circle is for uniaxial compression. Similarly, the rightward circle at the restricting tensile stress st is really for uniaxial tension.
On the diagram (dot line circle), the central Mohr's Circle reflects the maximum permissible stress for a transitional state of stress.
