Describe how the diaphragm is used in activities of daily life. Include use in both concentric and eccentric actions. Focus on the execution phase unless the diaphragm's primary action is during the preparation phase.

Expert Solution
Introduction

A dome-shaped, thin sheet of skeletal muscle present at the rib cage's inferior most part in the chest, which functions to separate the body's thoracic and abdominal cavity, is termed as the diaphragm. The use of the diaphragm is observed in essential body activities.

Explanation

The use of the diaphragm occurs during the process of breathing, which is divided into inspiration and expiration. The muscular diaphragm contracts and relaxes, changing the thoracic cavity volume, allowing the inflow and outflow of gases by creating a pressure difference. During inspiration, when the thoracic cavity observes an inflow of air in the respiratory passage, the diaphragm contracts and flattens to increase the cavity's size so that more air could be accommodated inside the lungs. At the time of expiration, the diaphragm relaxes, allowing the thoracic cavity volume to decrease. The outflow of carbon dioxide from the lungs to the external environment occurs as the decrease in volume increases pressure inside the lungs. Eccentric actions are accompanied by the inspiration where the diaphragm contracts and becomes. In contrast, the concentric activities are accompanied by the diaphragm's relaxation contributing to the exhalation process.
