Describe hemispheric lateralization and functional differences
between the hemispheres

Expert Solution
Step 1

Hemispheric lateralization or hemispheric specialization, also referred to as cerebral dominance is a characterization of the human brain. The medial longitudinal fissure separates the human brain into two halves called as cerebral hemispheres connected by corpus callosum. Although the macro structure of the two hemispheres appears to look the same, the reason for the different specialized function in the two hemispheres is due to the different composition of the neuronal network.

Each hemisphere has a specialization in different tasks. In broader sense, the left side of the controls the language while the right side of the brain controls visual imagery. Also, the left side of the brain is responsible for controlling the language and the right side is involved with the emotional interpretation of the words. The right side of the brain is dominant in remembering the interpretation of the faces and visual inputs.

Also damage of one side of the brain affects the functioning of the other side of the brain. Also people having damage in one part of the brain which is dedicated for a specific function, will process information from the other side of the brain for the same function.

Also, the right side of the body is controlled by the left side of the brain and the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain. Almost 95% of the right handed subjects have their language left-lateralized.  Itis either bilateral of r almost 50% lateralized in the 50% left handed subjects.

The left side of the brain is responsible for the ration ]al thinking and logical reasoning like mathematics. The riht side of the brain is responsible for creative activities and in emotionally involvement. Thus the people whose left side of brain is dominant will be logicaland the people having right side of the brian dominant will be emotional.
