1. Clay is considered to be one of the fine-grained materials found in the stomach of the earth with a diameter equal to or less than 0.005mm. As per the standard definition, most of the clays are inorganic except a few like muck, peat, etc. The formation of clay takes place when there is weathering and erosion of rocks that contain soil, glacial clays, ceramic clays, and the mother of clay ( mineral group feldspar). 
Clay bonds with one or more minerals of the clay in the presence of even a little quantity. Quartz(SiO2), organic matter, Oxides of metal ( MgO, Al2O3), etc. If clay retains water it can be molded in any shape and the plasticity and hardness of the clay completely depend upon the chemical composition of the materials it has bonded with.
