Question
Describe about the Subsurface stresses relating to the at-rest condition.
Expert Solution
Step 1
Lateral earth pressure is defined as the pressure which is exerted by the soil mass on the wall in horizontal direction. It affects the strength and consolidation behavior of the structure so considered very important in design of structure.
There are three types of lateral pressure on the basis of movement of the wall with respect to back-fill soil.
- Earth pressure at rest
- Active earth pressure
- Passive earth pressure
Step 2
At rest condition there is no movement of wall with respect to soil mass, so there will be no strain in the lateral direction as well as in horizontal direction.
The vertical subsurface stress relating to at rest condition at any depth z is given by,
