Drainage is also the absorption of waste water whether from the ground level or the root zone. Extra moisture may be affected by precipitation or excessive use of groundwater, but it may also have some other beginnings including such waterway flow or flooding.
In quite arid regions, solvents frequently build up in the soil. Many plants over salted soils may not develop properly. Sodium chloride may be drained out through seeping river water through to the growing season's root zone. Farm workers can add a little water to a ground than even the plants have to do to ensure satisfactory absorption. Yet saline water from the filtration would allow the ground water to increase. Thus drainage to balance the ground water also controls soil water content
