Question

Describe a way (using equations) that you could calculate 602 – 78 mentally without using the standard paper-and-pencil algorithm.

Expert Solution
Step 1

from the first impression of the question, the strategy I use to solve mental maths by rounding the fig. to their nearest zero and perform the operation and then deal with the rest.

Like here if first change the values to 600 and 80. then perform the subtraction as 600-80=520, very simple and intuitive.

now when we see the original values the unit place values differ by +2-(-2)=4. so we add this to the result. and we will get our final answer as 524.
