Question

Define the process nomenclature.

Expert Solution
Step 1

INTRODUCTION:

Particular term has been defined for choosing name of different compound in the field of science called Nomenclature.

It is a set of rules that are used to generate name of different chemical compounds.Every chemical compound have two names one is common name and the other is systematic name.

Step 2

EXPLANATION:

Nomenclature for different chemical compounds is given by IUPAC(International union of pure and applied chemistry)

Example:

propanoic acid

Every organic compound contain two parts one is functional group and the other is aliphatic or aromatic chain attached to the functional group.

In propanoic acid that is CH3CH2COOH

It is an organic molecule which contain -COOH group as a functional group and the aliphatic chain attached to it is -CH2CH3 which contain 2 carbon and -COOH contain one carbon.

Hence, the name of the molecule should be prefixed with propane.

-COOH is a carboxylic acid functional group. So, the molecule is suffixed with -oic acid.

Therefore, the name of the molecule is Propanoic acid.
