Question

Define the mechanisms of entropy transfer for a general system.

Expert Solution
Step 1

There are basically two forms in which entropy is transferred namely through heat transfer & mass flow. As for the adiabatic closed system, the heat transfer, as well as mass transfer, is zero, hence entropy can't be transferred for the respective system. The two mechanisms of entropy transfer are explained below:

(1) Heat transfer: Heat can be defined as the portion of energy that is disorganized. Some of its disorganized energy in the form of entropy can flow away with heat. Rejection of heat is the sole way in which the entropy of any system with a fixed mass can be decreased. Rate of entropy transfer or entropy flow can be defined as the ratio of the amount of heat that is transferred to its absolute temperature that can be further represented as:

Sheat = QTwhere T is absolute temperature in Kelvin & Q is heat transferred. Interestingly, the entropy transfer takes place in the same direction of heat transfer.
