The word "Quito" often dates from the Spanish colonization in the 16th century; it takes its name from a pre-Inca society or tribe "Quitus" that inhabited the valley centuries before.
The city of Quito is the capital of Ecuador, in the north-central part of the country. It was captured by the Incas in 1487 and capture under the Spanish from 1534 to 1822. The city has been repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes. It is the second-highest official capital city in the World, and it is closest to the equator.
