define Leptotene?
Meiosis is a reduction division that takes place in all sexually reproducing plants and animals. It is called as reduction division because the division produces four haploid daughter cells from a diploid mother cell. The chromosome number is reduced to half the original number in the daughter cells.
Meiosis has two successive cell divisions which are termed first meiotic division and second meiotic division. But chromosome duplication happens only once.
First meiotic divsion is the reduction division and second meiotic division is just like mitosis.
However the prophase stage of first meiosis, is quite longer than that of the prophase of mitosis. It consists of leptotene, zygotene,pachytene,diplotene,diakinesis.
