Define investiture controversy

Expert Solution
Introduction

Investiture Controversy was an important event in the medieval history of Europe. It was the conflict between the church and the state in the Roman Empire. During the 11th and 12th century, Pope challenged the authority of the monarchs in European kingdoms. The main issue was who is the authoring agency to appoint or invest the officials of local church such as Bishop in cities and Abbots in Monasteries, is it Pope or Monarch. The controversy ended with agreement on the Concordat of Worms in 1122 AD between Emperor Henry-V and Pope Calixtus-II. The royal and spiritual powers were codified and role of monarch diminished in appointment of the Bishops. People see it as the victory of Pope and his claim of being the only representative of God in the world get strengthened. But still king has control over the church.
