- Gentry (from Old French genterie, from gentil, "high-conceived, respectable") are "all around conceived, polite and very much reared individuals" of high friendly class, particularly previously.
- Gentry , in its greatest undertone, alludes to individuals of good friendly position associated with landed homes (see manorialism), upper levels of the church, and "delicate" groups of long drop who at times never acquired the authority option to bear an emblem.
