Cable structures :
Cable structure, a type of tension-prone long-span structure that uses suspension cables for support. The suspension bridge, the cable-stayed roof, and the bicycle-wheel roof provide highly effective cable systems. The elegant curve of a suspension bridge's massive main cables is like a catenary, the form assumed by every string or wire freely suspended between two points.
Steel cables radiating downward from masts that extend above the level of the roof support the cable-stayed roof from above. Two layers of tension cables radiating from an inner tension ring and an outer compression ring are used in the bicycle-wheel roof, which is in turn protected by columns.
For the last twenty-five years, high strength steel cables for space roof systems have been used widely. By using steel cables in the roof construction, there are two different options, when only conventional, e.g. beams, cantilevers, etc., or a space frame can be used. In this situation, instead of being assisted, the main roof frame is directly suspended from steel cables over the roof, which transfer the tensile forces to suitable anchorages.
