Anticipatory socialization is a mechanism that facilitates social interactions in which non-group members strive to adopt the values and standards of the groups they want to participate in, to promote their integration into the group, and to help them connect before they have been accepted.
Anticipatory socialization occurs when developing new expectations and principles to anticipate the potential role that we will play. The requisite changes in advance support the actual transition to the new position. Furthermore, we will decide if this position is right for us, as it takes time to accept some of the expectations and principles of a potential role.
Example: A police officer on the brink of serving on the nightlife switches his sleep patterns several weeks before the date of graduation. An hour later that night, he goes to bed and anticipates that he will be up and tired for the day. Some couples likewise live together until they get married to see if their future position is secure. They test the spouse's status before they lawfully agree to it.
