Due to the fall in bicarbonate level, a condition called primary bicarbonate deficiency occurs. In this condition, blood gets too acidic with the pH level 7.35. The maintenance of a pH level of blood between 7.35-7.45 is essential to maintain the homeostasis of blood.  Bicarbonate deficiency can be caused due to various factors. The cause might be gastrointestinal, exogenous or renal.

Too acidic blood gives rise to the condition of metabolic acidosis which is caused due to the decrease in the level of bicarbonates. Therefore, the decrease in bicarbonate concentration and decrease of blood pH below 7.35 leads to metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is a condition where there is buildup of acid in the blood. The lowering of pH is a clear indication of an acidic environment. This condition occurs mainly due to failure of the renal system. When acid cannot be excreted from the body by filtration in the kidneys, it builds up in the bloodstream. The symptoms that indicate metabolic acidosis are- nausea, vomiting, headache, loss of appetite, increase in heartbeat. In severe cases the albumin levels in the body start to decrease. The decrease of this albumin leads to loss of muscle function. It also leads to the hindrance in the working of the endocrine system and the working mechanism of hormones. 

  • Metabolic alkalosis- 

This is incorrect because, the increase in the level of bicarbonate leads to metabolic alkalosis. The increase in the bicarbonate levels also lead to the increase in the pH level. The pH of blood becomes alkaline.

  • Respiratory acidosis- 

This is incorrect because respiratory acidosis is a condition where carbon dioxide gets accumulated in the body. This leads to the lowering of pH to an extreme level. This makes the blood extremely acidic. This leads to failure of ventilation in the body. 

  • Respiratory alkalosis-

This is incorrect because this is the condition where the levels of carbon dioxide drop drastically in the body. This causes the pH of the blood to rise and it makes the blood alkaline. It makes the person take breaths more than what is normally taken.
