Transcribed Image Text:Time, Rate, And Distance
If you travel for two hours at 50 kph to reach a destination, you know that you
would have traveled 100 km. In short, time (number of hours) multiplied by rate equals
distance or D=rt.It is convenient to have a diagram in time, rate, and distance problems.
There are usually two moving objects. (Sometimes there is one moving object traveling at
two different speeds at different times.)
For example, one car leaves Santiago City for Cauayan City and at the same time
another car leaves Cauayan City for Santiago City on the same road but traveling at
different rates. The cars travel until they meet.
Or suppose two cars leave the same station at different times traveling in the same
direction. One car overtakes the other. The distances are equal at the point where one
overtakes the other.
You should fill in the appropriate information from each problem. Rate is in
kilometers per hour (kph) and time is in hours. Distance will therefore be in kilometers.
The basic relationship is time multiplied by rate equals distance. D =rt.

Rate in covering a distance of x in 10 hours
1. A passenger bus starts from Tuguegarao City and heads for Santiago City at 40
kph. Two hours later, a car leaves the same station for Santiago City at 60 kph.
How long will it be as the car overtakes the passenger bus?
2. Dan makes a business trip from his house to Ilagan in two hours. One hour later, he
returns home in traffic at a rate of 20 kph less than his rate going. If Dan is gone a
total of 6 hours, how fast did he travel on each leg of the trip?
3. In his motorboat, a man can go downstream in one hour less time than he can go
upstream the same distance. If the rate of the current is 5 kph, how fast can he travel
in still water if it takes him 2 hours to travel upstream the given distance?
