Question

Complete and balance the following equations: N2O31g2 + H2O1l2 ¡

Expert Solution
Step 1

In chemistry, a chemical reaction contains two major parts- Reactants ( substrate ) and Products. The combination of reactants gives rise to products. Sometimes, a direct reaction may not happen and the reaction may go through an intermediate step where the intermediate is a short-lived species. It is important to balance a chemical reaction so as to maintain the law of conservation of mass.

Step 2

The given incomplete and unbalanced reaction is-

N2O3 (g) + H2O (l)

Here, dinitrogen trioxide( N2O3 ) and water ( H2O ) are the reactants. These two reactants combine to produce nitrous acid ( HNO2 ) which is the product. Dinitrogen trioxide and water react in the ratio of 1:1 to give 2 parts of nitrous acid. The balanced and complete chemical equation is-

N2O3 (g) + H2O (l)  2 HNO2 (aq)
