The flame from the burning sulfur is very faint and a bit hard to see in regular air, so the video shows the
burning compound being lowered into a container full of oxygen gas. To understand why this helps the
flame glow brighter, it is helpful to look at the chemical reaction for burning sulfur. When a substance
burns in air it is essentially reacting with the oxygen in the air according to the equation shown below:
S(s) + O2(g) SO2(g) + heat
The air contains only about 21% oxygen so the reaction happens with only 21% of the molecules in the
air. When you lower the sulfur into a container of pure oxygen the reaction happens with 100% of the
molecules and so the reaction happens on a larger scale and more quickly - resultingin the emission of
much more light!
