Compare the mechanism of action of sympatomimetics and sympatholytics
Expert Solution
Step 1
- Sympathomimetics are the chemical agents that induce the adrenergic receptors different adrenergic receptors present across many organ systems. Example: Amphetamine.
- They act through either directly or indirectly thereby contribute to the elevation of sympathoadrenal mediators such as norepinephrine and epinephrine.
- They are the prescribed in the treatment of the cardiac arrest, hypotension, allergic rhinitis, open angle glaucoma narcolepsy, obesity and prevention of uncontrollable leakage of urine.
- Sympatholytics are the class of drugs that exhibit the antagonistic effect towards the adrenergic agents hence known as adrenergic blocking agents or adrenergic antagonists.
- They are classified into two types such as
- alpha 1 & 2 receptors. Example: phenoxybenzamine
- Beta 1 & 2 receptors. Example: Acebutolol
- Alpha 1 & 2 receptors show the pharmacological effects by reducing the elevated blood pressure through vasodilation.
- Beta blockers such as atenolol binds to the beta adrenergic receptors selectively located in the vascular smooth muscle and heart thereby hinder the adrenergic hormones such as isoproterenol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.
