Compare the major stages in multiplication of animal viruses and
bacteriophages.

Animal viruses are those which have shown to successfully infect animals including humans. Examples of animal viruses include the Herpes simplex virus and Human immunodeficiency virus. However, bacteriophages only infect other bacterial cells.
The stages of multiplication of viruses include:
Attachment: The process by which the virus recognizes the host cell and attaches to the same.
Penetration: The process by which the virus or the contents of the viral capsid enters the host cell.
Uncoating: Most animal viruses are degraded to release the contents of the capsid into the cytoplasm of the cell.
Assembly: The process by which the replicated genetic material and proteins assemble together to form virion particles.
Release: In this process, the viral particles formed during the assembly stage are released into the surrounding environment to infect other cells.
