Compare and contrast the structure and function of the two types of heart valves.

Introduction:
Heart valves- These are flap( leaflet) like structures which prevent backflow of blood.
There are two types of heart valves they are:
▪︎ Atrioventricular valves (AV)
▪︎ Semilunar valves (SL)
Structure:
a) AV valves - These are located between the upper atria and lower ventricles and are composed of endocardium and connective tissue.
These consists of two types of valves
▪︎ Tricuspid valve- present between right atrium and right ventricle ,it has three cusps which are anterior, septal and posterior.
▪︎ Mitrial ( bicuspid) valve - present between left atrium and left ventricle ,it has two cusps which are anterior and posterior.
b) Semilunar valves : These are located between ventricles and their corresponding arteries ,which are composed of endocardium and connective tissue.
Two types of valves are-
▪︎Pulmonary valve-located between right ventricle and pulmonary trunk ,it has three cusps which are right ,left and anterior.
▪︎Aortic valve - located between left ventricle and aorta, it has three cusps which are right, left and posterior.
