Compare and contrast the differences between post-tensioning and pre-tensioning with supporting examples?

Expert Solution
Step 1 Introduction

When in concrete where internal stress of suitable magnitude and distribution is introduced, the stress resulting from the external loading is balanced by prestressing force. The concrete is said to be prestressed.

Following are the advantages of prestress,

  • Due to prestressing, the size of the member will be smaller and hence the dead load.
  • In this entire cross-section of the concrete is utilized.
  • High prestressing force also increases the shear strength of the concrete.
  • Prestressed sections are better for dynamic and fatigue loading.
  • Construction is faster

There are two types of prestress,

  1. Pre-tensioned prestress
  2. Post-tensioned prestress
