Question 12

Expert Solution
Step 1

Oct-1-yne is a terminal alkyne. It contains a strong and sharp -CH peak around 3300cm-1 as it contains a triple bond at the terminal position.

Chemistry homework question answer, step 1, image 1

The peak which is present at 3000 cm-1is because of the saturated bond in oct-1-yne.The presence of terminal alkyne in oct-1-yne is mainly responsible for a large more intensified peak around 3300 cm-1. The intensity of the peak corresponds to SP hybridized carbon is larger as compared to other abundant SP3 C-H peaks.

The percentage of S-character is directly proportional to electronegativity. As the percentage, S-character increases bond strength increases. So here percentage S-character is more in SP than SP3 hybridized carbon. Bond strength is more in the case of SP hybridized carbon which resultsing in an increase in the C-H bond stretching frequency.
