Step 1 Introduction
Electron affinity is defined as the quantity of energy released when an electron is added to a neutral atom. It is quite the opposite of ionization energy. The electron affinity increases from left to right across the period in the periodic table. But it has quite a few exceptions, namely atoms with half-filled and completely orbitals are more stable and it is hard to add an electron to such atoms. Hence, they release less energy, i.e. they form a less stable cation. The atoms with empty orbitals have more electron affinity, i.e., releasing more energy when gaining an electron forming more stable cation.
