Buffer is the solution which resists the drastic change in pH upon addition of small amount of acid or base.
While choosing the buffer for a specific pH, the pKa of the buffer should be near the desired pH of the solution and the capacity of a buffer should fall within one to two pH units above or below the desired pH values.
Ideally, the pH range of a buffer solution is equal to pKa ± 1.

pKa of CH3COOH is 4.745
pKa of HF is 3.1
pKa of HCN is 9.2
pKa of HClO2 is 1.95
