Expert Solution

Step 1 Introduction
The organic compounds are named according to specific set of rules put forth by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry(IUPAC). Hence, the system is called the IUPAC nomenclature.
Steps involved in IUPAC nomenclature.
- Identifying the principal carbon chain(i.e. longest carbon chain) and assigning the root name for this parent chain.
- In cyclic compounds, the cyclic system is usually taken as the parent chain unless attached to a longer carbon chain. They are given a prefix cyclo.
- The chain is numbered in so that the substituents get the smallest number.
- A proper suffix is assigned to the parent chain name based on the presence of double, triple bonds of carbon(-ene, -yne). The position of unsaturation is mentioned in the parent chain name(given the smallest possible number)(Ex, pent-1-ene, pent-2-ene, etc..)
- Functional groups are mentioned using a proper prefix or suffix in the parent chain name. (-OH, hydroxy or -ol). Hetero atoms are mentioned using prefix(Ex. chloro- for Chlorine)
- Identical groups are named as di-, tri- and so on.
- The substituents are mentioned in alphabetical order before the parent chain name.
