- The secondary alcohol is one hydrogen atom on the carbon that contains a hydroxy functional group, hence it is oxidized into a ketone.
- The tertiary alcohol has no hydrogen atom on the carbon that contains a hydroxy functional group, hence tertiary alcohol does not oxidize in normal conditions.
