Question
A pitcher claims he can throw a 0.148-kg baseball with as much momentum
as a 2.48-g bullet moving with a speed of 1.50 x 103 m/s.
(a) What must the baseball's speed be if the pitcher's claim is valid?
m/s
(b) Which has greater kinetic energy, the ball or the bullet?
The ball has greater kinetic energy.
The bullet has greater kinetic energy.
O Both have the same kinetic energy.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Momentum of an object with  a mass m is given by the product of the mass and velocity v with which it is moving. So let us consider the velocity of baseball as v. Now the mass of bullet is 2.48 gm. It can be converted to SI which is given by,

2.48×10-3 kg. Velocity of bullet is 1.50×103. So we can compare the momentum of both the objects to find out the velocity of the baseball.

0.148×v=2.48×10-3(1.50×103)

v=(2.48)(1.50)0.148

v=25.14m/s

Thus velocity of baseball must be 25.14m/s.
