CASE STUDY: MARY MORAKA Mary Moraka has a bachelor's degree and has worked for five years as a computer pro- grammes for an oil company. In four short years she has more new software programmes to her credit than anyone else in the department. She is highly creative and widely respected. However, Mary is impulsive and has little tolerance for those whose work is less crea- tive. She does not offer to help coworkers and, because of this, they are reluctant to ask. Mary is also slow to cooperate with other departments-in meeting their needs because she works primarily to enhance her own software-writing ability. She spends evenings and weekends working on her programmes. Mary is a hard-working technical employee, but she sees little need to worry about other people. Mary received high merit raises, but she was passed over for promotion and does not understand why. She decided to start her own business. She developed an outstanding business plan for an online computer software business and used the business plan to en- tice investors into her venture. She rented space in a local warehouse where she and her employees filled mail orders. Her major competition has four employees serving also as an executive management team, while Mary runs her business autocratically. She hires and trains each employee in how to do his or her job efficiently and at the same time stresses the importance of customer satisfaction. Case study questions 1. Can you explain why she was not be promoted to the level of manager? 2. Explain to Mary what is necessary to be a good manager.
