Qualitative Research Design Use this design to answer Questions 1-6 Carla is an organisational psychologist who is interested in how workplace managers use motivational interviewing during performance appraisal meetings to improve staff productivity. Motivational interviewing has been studied extensively in clinical and health psychology, but less in organisational psychology. As there are no quantitative measures of motivational interviewing that can be adapted from clinical or health psychology for use in organisational psychology, Carla decides to use a qualitative approach to conduct exploratory research about this topic. Carla recruits participants through a large multinational company that has recently trained all its managers in motivational interviewing. The multinational company is committed to understanding whether there is a benefit to their investment in training and gives Carla access to the global management team and their subordinates. She decides to focus recruitment on the Brisbane office of the company. She recruits any managers and subordinates at that office who are willing to participate in her study. All nine members of the small management team based in the Brisbane office of the company, along with four subordinates, participate in Carla's study. She individually interviews each participant. Each interview ranges in length from 45-60 minutes. Carla develops a topic guide and uses this to organise each interview. After the first few interviews, Carla customises the topic guide to suit differences in perspectives that she has identified between managers and subordinates. Carla analyses the interview data using an inductive approach, to identify similar experiences across participants. She quickly notices that subordinates report different experiences to managers. As only four of her participants are subordinates, she excludes this data from further analysis. Throughout the data generation and analysis process, Carla keeps a journal, documenting any notable issues or events that occur with the participants or the research process more generally, as well as her own personal reactions to the research process. Carla uses the information contained in this journal to understand and contextualise the findings of her study.
