Can the beams be built-up or fabricated in a shop using plates? Give an example?

Expert Solution
Step 1

- Built up beam is a steel structural member which is made rather than rolled by welding or riveting, which also known as compound beam.

- The structural framework element consisting of single angle irons, channels, I-beams, and similar simple metal parts joined together by batten plates or lattice into a single unit.

- Built-up beams, for example columns and chord members, are primarily used as structural compressed components.

- In particular, they are used in cases where the chance of buckling involves an improvement in certain members' cross-sectional spinning radius, that is, decreased flexibility in the individual.

- In such cases, the cross-sectional components of the built-in beam may be sufficiently removed to avoid buckling and attached to them with single or double-diagonal crossbars.

- examples of built up beam includes :

1- A precast concrete beam units which are joined by shear connectors.

2-  A flitch beam

3- A timber forming one of larger dimensions made up of several pieces which are fastened together.
