Question
Please help me calculate the theoretical yield of the final product in the reaction shown in the photo!
Synthesis of cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl iodide
Procedure
A 50 mL one neck round bottom flask equipped with a refluxing condenser is charged
with 2.0 g of [(15-C5H5) Fe(CO)2]2 and 25 mL of chloroform followed by 2.0 g of iodine. This
black/brown mixture is refluxed for 30 minutes under N2 atmosphere (use an oil bath, nitrogen
bubbler and a refluxing condenser).
After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture is washed in a separatory funnel
with a solution of sodium thiosulfate 5-hydrate (10 g in 50 mL of H2O or scale up as necessary)
in two or three portions to remove excess iodine. Remove the volatiles using a rotary
evaporator.
The black crystalline residue was washed with petroleum ether (2 x 5 mL) and sucked
dry to obtain the final product, (n5-C5H5) Fe(CO)21. Record the IR spectra of both the starting
material and the final product.
