Question

Calculate the number of shared electrons(S), using the formula
S = N –A
Where N= total no of valence electrons needed by all atoms in the molecule
A= total no of valence electrons available in each atom (remember to add electrons
for negatively charged ions and subtract electrons for positively charged ion, Draw the Lewis Dot formula, Determine the electronic geometry of the central atom, Sketch the geometry around the central atom AND Describe the geometry for the following:

NH3

NH4+

PCl6-

Expert Solution
Step 1

A) To calculate the shared electrons , we would calculate the valance electrons present in each atom and the electrons required by each element needed by them to complete their octets .

B) To draw the Lewis dot structure we would use the total valance electrons and arrange them accordingly to complete the octet of each electron .

C ) To determine the electronic geometry around the central atom, would use VSEPR theory . For which we would calculate the steric number . From which we can determine the hybridisation of central atom .
