Question
  1. Calculate ΔS for a system if 2.50 mol of water (Cp= 75.3 J/(mol K) ) is heated from 0.00 °C to 50.0 °C under

    1. Constant pressure conditions

    2. Constant volume conditions.

Expert Solution
Introduction

For constant pressure heating
ΔS = nCp ln T2T1

For constant volume heating,
ΔS = nCv ln T2T1

Given that,
Cp = 75.3 J/mol K
Cp - Cv = R
substitute R  = 8.314 J/mol K in the above equation
Cv = 75.3 - 8.314 = 66.986 J/mol K
n = 2.50 mol
T1 = 0oC = 273.15 K
T2 = 50oC = 50 + 273.15 = 323.15 K
