Question

Calculate all values of X to the correct significant figures.
a. X = 0.00076000 /40.3
b. X = 80.3 + 12.44 – 5.6
c. X = (0.61026)(2.00020)(1400)
d. X = (2.98 X 10-2) X 3.777
e. X = (5.670 – 3.0098)/2.13

Expert Solution
Step 1: Understanding significant figures

Significant figures are the number of digits with certainty in a measured value. Thus, the number of significant figures quantifies the measure of the accuracy of the value. Accuracy on the other hand is the measure of the extent to which the given measured value agrees with the true value of the measurement.

We can multiply, divide, add, and subtract values with a definite number of significant figures. When two or more numbers are multiplied or divided, the number of significant figures in each of the original values is calculated. The smallest of the number of significant figures is considered. The product or the quotient obtained from the result of multiplication or division will have the smallest of all number of significant figures.

All non-zero digits in a value are significant. The zeroes that lie between two non-zero digits are significant. The trailing zeroes that lie right to the decimal point after a non-zero digit are significant in nature. The non-trailing zeroes right or left of the decimal point are not significant. The exponential digits are not significant in scientific notation.
