Briefly discuss how environmental policy is implemented in the United States. Where does the authority for environmental regulations originate; how is it delivered from the federal government to the States; and what role do localities have in implementing environmental quality?
On January 1, 1970, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was enacted into law. Making any decisions, federal agencies are responsible under NEPA to analyze the environmental consequences of their development proposals. NEPA regulates a wide range of activities, including:
deciding whether or not to provide permission,
implementing government land management initiatives, and
Highways as well as other clearly and openly facilities are being built.
Agencies use the NEPA process to assess the environmental, societal, and economic consequences of their development proposals. Organizations also allow citizens to see and remark on their evaluations. The federal government is required by this program to take all reasonable efforts to establish and preserve conditions that allow man and the environment to coexist in productive peace.
