The hypothalamus is the master gland of the endocrine system, and it regulates the production and secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus synthesizes releasing or inhibiting hormones that travel to the anterior pituitary gland via the portal system and governs the production and secretion of hormones from the anterior pituitary gland. In contrast, the posterior pituitary can be considered as a neural continuation of the hypothalamus, and these two regions communicate via the nerve tissues; the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin, which are produced by the hypothalamus, gets temporarily stored within the posterior pituitary and are secreted in response to the signals received by the hypothalamus.
