All Saints' Day
IT WAS AGAIN that time of the year when the veil between
the worlds is thin. However, this year the veil had been ripped
asunder. It was gone. After Pen told me about the quatrefoil
she kept talking. She told me that in the medieval view there
were rifts, holes, tears in space and time through which demons
and human evils can erupt. Hatreds boil through the cracks.
Even one person of a certain magnetism in this time can seize
the energy and cause a maelstrom to form around each sentence
they utter. One person can create a giant hurricane of unreality
that feels like reality.
"That's what's happening,' she said. 'Just look around.'
I didn't have to. I felt like I could see everything-hatred,
valor, cruelty, mercy. It was all over the news and in the hospi-
tals and all over me. Watching and waiting for word of Pollux
had turned me inside out.
I saw the families in parkas at the windows, holding up
their love signs. I saw the old paper hearts, curled, the new
paper hearts, still vivid. I wore fear like a cape. Fear was my
sack pants, my black runners. I always carried along Pollux's
dim brown plaid man shirt and favorite old jeans. Every day I
got an update. Pollux was back to holding his own again. One
day improvement, the next day worse. I tried not to shift my
thoughts with every new voice on the phone. I'd never known
Pollux to be afraid for himself, but he'd never been so helpless.
For a while in my life I'd lived with the certainty that I would
be held in love, and now I was sleeping in a parking lot. For a
while in his life, Pollux had been held in love, and now he was
marooned in a hospital bed on the other side of a wall.
