Bitumen is a primary engineering material, due to its low cost as compared to other binding materials it is used in relatively thick films to provide protective film against corrosive influences and weather.
Bitumen is a dense viscous material, dark black or brown in color, used as a waterproofing and binding material.
Nowadays, the material is used most often in road paving. The majority of roads are made of either bitumen or concrete or the combination of bitumen and aggregates. A key benefit, other than its adhesive and waterproofing qualities, is that engineers replacing asphalt roads can reuse the material on other road projects. Bitumen is also commonly used by manufacturers in the creation of roofing products.
As under the heavy loads, bitumen can deform permanently, depending on the composition of the asphalt mixture, the ambient temperature, and the amount of stress placed on the material. Bitumen oxidizes, which can leave the asphalt brittle and result in its cracking.
