Here are the results of the experiment: The images depict a root experiment involving several test tubes in a rack, each containing a plant stem immersed in transparent liquid, presumably water. The images document the progression over time: 1. **Top-Left Image (Post-Setup):** - Shows test tubes filled with liquid. Some test tubes contain blue-colored solutions, indicating the use of a dye. - Plant stems are placed inside the tubes with the leaves above the liquid surface. 2. **Top-Right Image (After One Day):** - The blue dye appears to have moved upwards in some of the plant stems, demonstrating the initial stages of capillary action or absorption. - Some stems show signs of discoloration in the leaves. 3. **Bottom Image (After Three Days):** - The dye has traveled further up the stems, with pronounced staining visible in some plants. - There is noticeable leaf wilting or discoloration, suggesting the plants' response to the experimental conditions. **Figure 8.2:** This figure shows the root experiment post-setup (top-left), after one day (top-right), and after three days (bottom). The images capture the progression of the dye within the plant stems and the physiological changes occurring over time.

Question

To investigate the function of the root system, four set-ups will also be prepared. Test tubes 1-3 will be filled with water to about three-fourths full, while only about 5-10 drops of water should be added into tube 4. Three fresh plants with intact roots and rid of the soil, will be placed into test tubes 2, 3 and 4. Roots should be completely immersed in water in tubes 2 and 3 while the root of the plant in tube 4 should not be in contact with (well above) the water. This will establish the setups which are: (a.) plant-free control, (b.) plant immersed in pure distilled water, (c.) plant immersed in distilled water-food color mixture, (d.) un-immersed plant. A few drops of oil should be added in all tubes to form a lipid layer on top of the water column on each set up. The set-ups should sit undisturbed at room temperature for two days. After 2 days, the water level will be observed as well as the condition of the plants in all the test tubes.

Interpret the result obtained from each of the set-ups

Here are the results of the experiment:

The images depict a root experiment involving several test tubes in a rack, each containing a plant stem immersed in transparent liquid, presumably water. The images document the progression over time:

1. **Top-Left Image (Post-Setup):**
   - Shows test tubes filled with liquid. Some test tubes contain blue-colored solutions, indicating the use of a dye.
   - Plant stems are placed inside the tubes with the leaves above the liquid surface.

2. **Top-Right Image (After One Day):**
   - The blue dye appears to have moved upwards in some of the plant stems, demonstrating the initial stages of capillary action or absorption.
   - Some stems show signs of discoloration in the leaves.

3. **Bottom Image (After Three Days):**
   - The dye has traveled further up the stems, with pronounced staining visible in some plants.
